The 6th G’s – REVIEW OF 2013 On the 23rd January live from Ujima House in St Pauls capturing the imagination of billions tuning in across the globe The G-Man AKA Roger Griffith and Mic B announced the winners to the one and only award show. Here is the list that matters coming better late than never on the Old Skool Cruising show every Monday 4-7pm on Ujima 98FM and ujimaradioc.om Award winners in CAPS Honourable mentions are in brackets. i. Man of the Year – NELSON MANDELA- as in life with his death a true legend (Idris Elba see above and gained plaudits on Pacific Rim & Luther too. Sir Alex Ferguson, look at them now, made winning seem easy and turned management in football into a respected trade. ) ii. Woman of the Year – OPRAH WINFREY back to the silver screen after Color Purple in The Butler, respectful at Mandela funeral still the one to follow as a media mogul. (Margaret Thatcher continued to divide opinion and Britain after her last breath. Angelina Jolie was brave going public on her double mastectomy as a leading Hollywood lady. Beyoncé pure class dropping that album out of nowhere and better tunes too. Nigella Lawson grace under fire and Ann Williams campaigner for those 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough. The tribute given by Sue Johnston at BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year moved many to tears. Could’ve been anyone of us during a wretched time for genuine football fans in the 1980’s and 90’s.) iii. Event of the Year - THE MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR NELSON MANDELA – what else brought mighty enemies together and we’ve all had ahem…encounters at a funeral, just never been caught Brotha Barack! iv. Idiot of the Year –CHARLES SAATCHI - all that woman and you can only put your hands on her throat? Money can’t buy you the love of a good woman or the British public. (Miley Cyrus. Twerking can’t buy you respect either.) v. TV Programme – MAD MEN – the continuing jaw-dropping drama serial portrayal of men at their worst …and best. (Dancing on the Edge, Breaking Bad, Broadchurch.) vi. Film of the Year – NOTHING BUT A MAN reputedly Malcom X’s favorite film. This 1965 movie was a great portrayal of the struggles of not just race but poverty, relationships and fatherhood in the Deep South. We screened it as part of the Ujima Film Club screened at the Bristol Watershed thanks to Paul Hassan. (Gravity, Captain Philips, Lincoln and Django Unchained if only for preparing us for 12 Years a Slave.) vii. Community Event of the Year – BRISTOL BUS BOYCOTT 50 & PAUL STEPHENSON – such a pleasure to represent our esteemed elders and the volunteers such as Karen Garvey, Lileith Morrison, Richard Jones, Marvin Rees Rob Mitchell and many others (of course St Pauls Carnival with Mayor George Ferguson, but you can only win this award once it is that prestigious and they got a G in 2010.) viii. Sports Person of the Year – Double World Champion CHRISTINE OHUGURGU (Andrew Murray, Mo Farah, Leigh Halfpenny Six Nations Champ & a Lion. No team award but well done Bayern Munich for treble and fans were great at Wembley for Champions League final.) ix. Villain of the Year – GEORGE ZIMMERMAN for the murder of American teenager TRAYVON MARTIN (perianal runner-up Rupert Murdoch & James Murdoch, Sepp Blatter, FIFA, awarding Russia & Qatar future World Cups just seems to be a worse decision by the week. x. Duet of the Year – Fire We Make – ALICIA KEYS & MAXWELL from Girl on Fire album despite a late bid from Mr & Mrs Carter on Drunk in Love. xi. LEST WE FORGET - Felix Dexter – Great comedian we only respected in death. Donald Byrd, Maxine Powell - Motown teacher of the greats, author James Herbert – responsible for my writing and dark humour), Lou Reed and Cleotha Staples from the Staple Sisters. xii. Record of the Year – HAPPY – PHARELL WILLIAMS (Fall for You, Kings of Tomorrow. Get Lucky – Daft Punk yes it was catchy and that good, White Noise, Disclosure very different, Take Back the Night, Justin Timberlake and am I allowed to say Blurred Lines, Robin Thicke and still keep my job?) xiii. Artist of the Year – PHARELL WILLIAMS – Produced everything from JT to Jennifer Hudson and Jay-Z but added great vocals too. Whether leading or supporting role back to his very kool unique best. xiv. Album of the Year – BLACK RADIO VOL II – THE ROBERT GLASPER EXPERIENCE – In year when both Mic B and I searched the internet for back catalogues I loved this album. All my faves from Jill Scott, Snoop, Anthony Hamilton and Dwele plus Emeli Sande getting soulful and even Norah Jones doing Drum & Bass Bristol style. xv. News stories – Snow brought the UK to a halt. Climate Change or just the shape of things to come? Summer finally came and Bristol turned into a city of festivals with literally one every week. The Green Capital festival brought Bristol success as European Capital 2015. In politics UKIP popularity saw a hardening toward immigrants and war was waged by the political parties on those less well-off despite energy and food prices rising and the gap between rich and poor growing. Scottish independence came to our attention United we stand or separate we fall? In America. Mayhem was caused at the Boston Bombings; President Obama had a tough year. Filibustered and healthcare ground on, and he droned on too… But it was the anniversary of the march on Washington with the greatest speech in history from Dr Martin Luther King and the JFK assignation that grabbed our thoughts headlines. Not forgetting a place where I have visited where 4 little girls were killed from a bomb at 16th St Church in Birmingham, Alabama by the KKK. All were from 50 years ago in 1963. What will we remember I wonder in 2063? I’ll just concentrate on my Bristol’s Big Conversation with Bristol’s leaders on Ujima 5.30 on Monday’s. END
