The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to avoid authoritarian approach to resolving issues with the union. University of Benin chairman of the union Dr Anthony Moye Emina in a statement in Benin yesterday urged government to come with a clear agenda for implementing all agreements and MoUs entered. “The attention of our Union has been drawn to news report in some media alleging that the the president will direct the re-opening of all Nigerian universities with or without ASUU from Monday. We wish to state that while the president has an invitation to the leaders of our union for a dialogue, it will be unacceptable to our members if the government fails to come out with a clear agenda for implementing the 2009 agreement, MoU of 2012 and the recommendations of the Needs Assessment Report”. “We would like to remind government that authoritarian approaches to resolving issues in dispute with unions have never worked. In this case, such an affront will only deepen the crisis in education. Consequently we are expecting that government will take that path of honour and implement the 2009 agreement and 2012 MoU”.
