The Battle of Pollilur Sultanate of Mysore, 1780-1784 CE #India Gouache, rice paper with cotton backing, modern varnish H:127.5cm, W: 127.5cm PA.84.15 This section of the painting captures #Tipu in discussion with his cousin and commander in chief, Qamr al-Din, who is shown as a full-faced older man with a thick beard, unlike his younger and more delicately-featured relative. Both figures, and their horses, are enormous in comparison to the figures around them, as a means of showing their importance within the narrative. Their importance is further emphasised by the presence of assistants carrying flywhisks and parasols. Although the rose which Tipu holds may seem incongruous in a battle scene, it is a continuation of a painting tradition common in South India, in which the ruler is always shown with a flower. The pendant around Tipu’s neck and the ring on his little finger are likely to have an astrological significance. Tipu regularly consulted both Hindu and Muslim astrologers, and changed his jewellery according to their advice.
