The Board of Kent Wells Sherman House, inc.: (left to right) Ann Ward (Chair), Sally Burnell (Secretary), Roger Thurman (Vice Chair), Alan Orashan (Treasurer), Timothy Simankl (Historian and Preservation Expert). We formed in March 2012 and commenced looking for a location when Kent State informed us that including the house in their Esplanade plan was not possible. Denied several other locations, we found the lot on North Water and effected a purchase agreeement with the owner. This resulted in a lawsuit from the tenants renting the dilapidated building next door. This legal action delayed the project over a year but we secured enough basic financing to proceed with the foundation while Kent State is paying for the house move. The suit was baseless and we prevailed which released our bank financing. However, the delay has proved costly and more than ever we will need public support to help us complete the restoration of the building and grounds. The move was originally scheduled for 8/24 but a miscommunication between bureaucracies resulted in no AT&T crew mobilized to lower utility wires. That was cleared up, the process restarted so we were able to move today. Below are proofs of literature we handed out today explaining the project to date. If you would like to help out tax deductible donations can be made to the Kent Wells Sherman House, c/o the Kent Historical Society, 237 East Main, Kent OH 44240. You can also visit us at KWSH.org for more background. We have not felt worthy to ask for public support until we demonstrated our determination by purchasing the land, building the footers and foundation and moving the house to the new location: 247 North Water. Along the way we have received invaluable support from Hometown Bank, Kent State, Kent City Council, Kent City Dept. of Community Development and Engineering, the Kent Historical Society, architect Richard Hawksley, the Record Courier and many others who have already donated to this preservation effort.
