The Boxtrolls (2014) - A dark childrens storybook fantasy filled with monsters. I personally feel Boxtrolls is Laika studios most ambitious project to date - certainly there is a case for it being their most beautifully crafted on the visual end - but also might be its weakest. Its always hard to introduce a fantasy world with rules and infrastructure that differ from our own, and though Boxtrolls chooses the wiser road and spends a lot of time building up itself rather than rushing through it all, the pacing was still a bit wonky for me. In the end it all pays off though for an entertaining and worthwhile time at the cinema, filled with the heart, scope, and of course scary stuff that weve come to expect from this studio (the jokes this time around felt especially dark). I recommend it for someone wanting a fun film to see this October, and Be sure to stick around after the first animated section of credits for a pretty great gag involving two of the best characters in the movie and a pretty clever bit of meta philosophical humor.
