The Brigadier is not one for politicians, but hes always had a soft corner for Lal Bahadur Shastri, a man after his own heart. It must have been September,1965 when he came to address the army top brass. One small man in a dhoti, surrounded by uniformed officers. He simply said Bara Bara general lok bola hai ki Pakistan international border cross kiya hai, aur hame kadam uthana chahiye. Hamne kaha Uthaiye (senior officers have told me that Pakistan has crossed the international border and that we should take steps. And I said, please do!) No trying to do the generals jobs for them and confusing the issue beyond all redemption, as Nehru and Krishna Menon did in 1962. A simple, modest man with great clarity of thought who was both calm and strong when he was most needed.
