The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Mule Apparently in - TopicsExpress

The Cape Canaveral Lighthouse Mule Apparently in 1906 there was a recommendation to condemn the mule at Cape Canaveral Light Station. “...the recommendation that she should be shot...”3 Keeper Clinton P. Honeywell, saved the mule from being shot with the following letter dated April 19, 1906 : “Sir, in reply to your letter of the 14th in regard to work done and cost of feed for mule, I will say that the mule (mare) was delivered at this station on June 21st, 1893 , by the keeper of Mosquito Inlet station,... ...and turned over to the keeper of this station by the construction party on Oct. 20th 1894 . Since October 20th 1894 the mule has hauled all the oil used in the light-house, our fire wood (drift) from the beach, and made on an average of two trips a week to te post office (about 4 miles from station) for mail and household supplies for the keeper and two assts. We have to use a ground feed, for the mule’s teeth are so bad that she can not eat whole grain or hay, the only grass here that the mule can eat is the thin growth at the station, the growth in the surrounding country is saw palmetto and saw Grass. I will say that the feed for a year will cost about $50.00. Respectfully Clinton P. Honeywell Keeper4
