The City Pool, which was kept open after its public closure for the Swimming Groups to train in ,will be finally closed on Thursday 31 July. After this Newcastle City Council have confirmed that they will drain the pool which is expected to damage the tiles and create structural damage to the pools. The buildings remain of architectural and heritage significance. City Pool was one of only 19 public baths in the UK opened in the 1920s still in use and are Grade 11 listed. The Turkish Baths are the most important aspect from a heritage point of view being one of only 18 remaining Turkish Baths in the country of which only 7 including Newcastle are listed. The City are considering turning the small pool into a bar for City Hall, and have commissioned consultants to look into a partnership with the Theatre Royal to manage the City Hall. Although the The City Council say they would be open to a community-led bid for the Pool & Baths they plan to market the building in October and any community bid would have to compete against commercial bids. Meanwhile they are in direct discussions with community groups to transfer other leisure services:The City Hall, Scotswood Sports Centre, Eldon Leisure, Elswick Pool, Gosforth Pool and Outer West Pool.
