The City of Mississauga Metro News launched their annual photo contest last summer. My wife Karen insisted I join the contest. I am not keen at joining simply because I know there are a lot of talented residents in Mississauga. I have seen the past winners and their photos are all excellent works of art. With Karen’s persistence (I call it nagging), we submitted five photos the day before the deadline. You can tell, I was not really into the idea of joining; I did it to make my wife happy. Karen checked the newspaper and the city website religiously every week but to her dismay, nothing was mentioned about the photo contest. A month later, the newspaper announced the winner and the runner-ups. I even got an email from Metro News. As expected I did not win. I told Karen the result on our way home from work. She was very quiet. I even thought she was crying; you know the kind of cry where tears only trickles down the cheeks? She uses that when we watch sappy movies and soap operas. (She is our resident drama queen!) Karen was heartbroken, disappointed and deeply saddened so I told her there will always be next year. Two days ago, we were at Karen’s uncle’s house when we came across a Mississauga Community Guide. Karen was browsing it when she suddenly screamed like she won the lottery, followed by a strong whack on my back. I checked what she’s looking at and saw one of the photos I submitted in the contest with my name at the bottom. It was used for “Mississauga’s Fast Facts”. Karen was beaming from ear to ear and ready to do her happy dance. She showed it to everybody and posted the page on Facebook. She was planning to frame it but I jokingly suggested to have it printed on canvass. Ting! That made the bright imaginary bulb on her head even brighter. Big mistake! It was sure a good pat on the back and honour to have this photo chosen and published in our city guide magazine. P.S. – My lovely wife also insisted I blog it.
