The College of Central Florida baseball team is off to a quick start. The Patriots improved to 3-0 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of Indian River State on Saturday afternoon at Goodlett Field. CF took the opener 2-0 behind a five-hit shutout by freshman Boomer Biegalski and then won the nightcap by a 2-1 count. After Biegalski got out a two-on and no-out jam in the fifth, the Patriots got doubles from Ben Ellzey, Ryan Smith and Robby Jolley to produce their runs for the opener. From there, Indian River made a charge in the seventh inning, as it put two runners on in the seventh, before Biegalski (1-0) struck out a pair of hitters to end the game. The freshman from Tallahassee Chiles High scattered six hits and didn’t walk a batter in going all seven innings. In the nightcap, CF got a pair of runs in the sixth and then relief pitcher Jake Gangelhoff got the final two outs to preserve the win for starter Robby Frantzis, who struck out eight and allowed just three hits in six innings of work. Indian River scored once in the seventh, before Gangelhoff entered and slammed the door. CF’s pitching staff had a streak of 18 scoreless innings going back to Friday’s opener against Pensacola, before the Pioneers finally scored in the top of the seventh. David Lugo led the way at the plate in the second game by going 3-for-3, including a double which put CF ahead 1-0. Christian Khawam, who had five RBI in the opener, added a run-scoring single in the sixth. N.J. Willamson went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the second game for the Patriots. Lugo led the way over the course of the doubleheader for CF with four hits.
