The Constitution: Our Constitution may have been written in 1787 but it is not an archaic document. When considering what our Constitution is I take it at its word; it is the Supreme Law of the Land. When I have a conflict in my mind as to what the Constitution intended between individual liberty, state sovereignty and federal power I always decide in favor of individual liberty first and foremost, then state sovereignty and very rarely federal power because I know the essence of our Constitution - limited government. If I feel our Constitution, or parts thereof, are old and outdated - not in keeping with the needs of a so-called modern society - then I am in favor of a constitutional amendment that respects individual liberty first, state sovereignty second and federal power last. Our Constitution is a very easy document to understand. It wasnt written in some ancient code but in the clear language of the day so that haberdashers, cobblers, farmers and shopkeepers could understand and ratify it. It is not some ancient mystery to be unraveled by jurists and barristers.
