The County of San Bernardino invites application for the position of Probation Corrections Officer Trainee Job Number: 14-07070-01 SALARY $17.49 - $22.34 Hourly $3,031.60 - $3,872.27 Monthly $36,379.20 - $46,467.20 Annually APPLY BY: 01/17/14 05:00 PM Applicants are encouraged to apply online: sbcounty.gov/hr THE POSITION The Probation Department is recruiting for Probation Corrections Officer Trainees who are assigned to the juvenile detention and treatment facilities and work under immediate supervision. This position performs counseling, guidance, supervision, care and custody of minors in juvenile pre and post-adjudicated detention facilities and performs related duties as required. New hires will fill Probation Corrections Officer-Rover (PCO-R) positions. PCO-Rs work to fill staffing needs at all detention and treatment facilities, and may be assigned to work any shift on a 24 hour per day/7 day per week basis, with regularly scheduled days off. PCO-Rs are provided with a minimum of two hours notification prior to the shift assignment on the scheduled work day. The Juvenile Detention Centers and treatment facilities are located in San Bernardino and Apple Valley. PCO-Rs shall be assigned to facilities based on their preference whenever possible. However, this is not a guarantee that they will be assigned to a specific location on all assignments; assignments will be based on the needs and operations of the department. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Work Environment: The nature of the work requires the ability to restrain or apprehend and control potentially violent and combative wards; incumbents must possess and maintain physical agility and strength throughout their employment. Training: Employees will be expected to participate in a continuum of force training program, which includes arrest and control techniques, tactical negotiation, and use of pepper spray. Work Schedule: Incumbents may be assigned to work any shift on a 24 hour per day/7 day per week basis, including holidays. Promotion: Probation Corrections Officer Trainees are eligible for promotion to Probation Corrections Officer upon obtaining a minimum of 1040 hours (approximately 6 months), meeting the minimum qualifications for Probation Corrections Officer (1 year of experience as a Probation Corrections Officer or equivalent position), and receipt of a satisfactory work progress report. Incumbents must be promoted within 18 months or be terminated. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Applicants must qualify under one of the following options: Option 1: Completion of any Associates or Bachelors degree or equivalent coursework. No experience required. Option 2: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or other closely related behavioral science courses. No experience required. Option 3: Nine (9) semester (14 quarter) units of completed college coursework in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or other closely related behavioral science courses -AND- two (2) years of full-time experience with responsibility for daily care and supervision of minors (wards) in a detention facility, treatment facility, or group home. Option 4: Nine (9) semester (14 quarter) units of completed college coursework in psychology, sociology, criminology, criminal justice or other closely related behavioral science courses -AND- two (2) years of military service with an honorable discharge. NOTE: Applicants that do not possess an Associate or Bachelors degree must provide a list of completed college coursework. Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Degrees or coursework completed outside of the U.S. must be accompanied by an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service indicating equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by any accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. SELECTION PROCESS The written test will be administered the weeks of March 10 and/or March 17, 2014. Applicants will be notified approximately one week prior to their scheduled test date of test time and location. The Corrections Standards Authority Juvenile Corrections Officer Examination consists of multiple choice questions, and contains the following sections: Following Written Directions Reading Comprehension Writing Clarity Writing Detail Accuracy with Forms and Coded Information Work Attitudes In order to prepare for the exam, candidates may wish to review the California Corrections Standards Authority Candidate Orientation Booklet for the Juvenile Corrections Officer Examination. The Booklet can be downloaded at bscc.ca.gov/programs-and-services/stc/services/stc-forms-and-publications (then click the STC Publications tab for Booklet). Candidates must be successful in the written examination in order to continue in the selection process. THE PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST Candidates passing the written examination and invited to participate in the physical agility test will be required to pass a Physical Agility Test consisting of the following: Support the weight of a 150-pound hanging bag for at least 30 seconds. Within 30 seconds, drag a 150-pound bag or dummy at least 20 feet. Within 30 seconds, walk briskly or jog through a 75-foot barrier course, pick up a 20-pound object and carry it back through the course without dropping it. Complete the 75-yard sprint within 30 seconds. We suggest the following in preparation: Wear proper jogging/walking shoes and comfortable (non-binding) gym clothing for these tests. Warm up properly before completing these tests. Consult your physician, if necessary, before performing these tests. NOTE: You will be required to sign a waiver before completing these tests. PEACE OFFICER REQUIREMENTS Prior to appointment, candidates must: Pass a background investigation, which includes a fingerprint check, psychological testing and a polygraph test. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony, or currently be (or have been within the last year) on court ordered probation. Be at least 20 years of age and possess a U.S. High School diploma, General Educational Diploma (GED), or have passed the California High School Proficiency Exam or equivalent. Provide official sealed transcripts of completed college coursework. Show proof of having completed the required basic certified training specified by Standards in Training for Corrections for the State of California and P.C. 832 (Laws of arrest, search and seizure), or meet this obligation within the first year of employment. Training will be provided upon hire. New hires who possess P.C. 832 certification will not be required to repeat training if they provide a copy of their P.C. 832 certificate. Be a United States citizen, or permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for U.S. citizenship. Possess a valid California Class C driver license. Employees in this class may be required to use personal vehicles and may be required to show proof of automobile liability insurance. Meet minimum vision (both eyes) and hearing (both ears) requirements. Vision and hearing tests will be administered. Pass a treadmill and a medical test.
