The Dangers Which Lurk In A Dirty Oven Add your Comment// Home Improvement// If you were to ask anyone, man or woman what the worst job in the kitchen is, the answer would be cleaning the oven. Sure, we all make sure the hob is acceptable and there are many cleaning products on the market that will help you easily do this. The same goes for the extractor (to a point). However, when it comes to the main part of your oven this is a job that’s often looked at and the thought “I’ll clean the bathroom first” comes into mind. Once the bathroom is sparkling again, you’ve forgotten all about the oven. Issues if You Don’t Keep Your Oven Clean There are few actual health issues if you don’t keep your oven clean. That is to say, it’s unlikely you’ll be allowing mould spores or other nasty airborne particles that can cause lung problems into the air you breathe, unless of course, it has reached a point where you can’t see the back for dirt! If you’re in business however, this is something you should consider when or if you receive a visit from the health inspector. Their attitude towards a dirty oven will be entirely different and they’re the experts so don’t hold me to the airborne particles fact. However, there is a real risk of fire and you only have to ask the average fire fighter how many times they’ve attended a building only to find the oven was the cause. This is because food and grease that’s burnt on the grilles and sides will continue to burn. Once it reaches a certain point, not only will your dinner be ruined but, you could be looking at an insurance claim as well! The other issues that can arise are that your oven becomes less efficient and you may notice that when you do a roast, you have to turn the meat so it cooks evenly both sides. Again, this is because dirt is getting in the way of parts your oven needs to cook food properly. Aside from these issues, if you open the door and smoke piles out, you’ve either burnt the dinner or your oven is in serious need of a clean. When this happens you really are opening yourself up to health issues. Particles that form the smoke can get into your lungs and cause problems. Cleaning the Oven on Your Own If you decide not to choose the services of an oven cleaning company obviously you’ll have to take the job on by yourself. For most of us, this is one of the worst cleaning jobs to do in the kitchen and it’s all because we avoid it for too long. By the time you’ve decided enough is enough, the first thing you’ll probably do is reach for the rubber gloves and a strong oven cleaner. Some profess to clean your oven in 30 minutes with just a light spray across the dirt. Then, all that’s needed from you is a little light scrubbing and a wipe clean. The trouble with this is most of these cleaners are formulated for light cleaning jobs. If you’re oven is filthy and dirty, it may take more than one spray (and all companies warn you about this). This means you’ll be spending hours on your oven and you won’t be able to use it straight away. These cleaners also contain some pretty heavy duty chemicals which can burn if you get them on your skin and it doesn’t bear thinking about what’s being released into the air when you spray it. The Best Way Forward If you have a particularly dirty oven, the best thing to do is invest a few pounds by using an oven cleaning company. These professionals have all that’s needed to give your oven a deep clean and they don’t use any harmful chemicals in the process. The best thing of all is that your oven will look just like new once it’s finished. Just remember, keep up the good work they’ve started and make this job part of your weekly routine. Aimee Coppock is a writer who understands that cleaning the oven is a task which many hate, yet we all must do it at some point. She recommends contacting an oven cleaning company who will use products to clean your oven which do not consist of any harmful chemicals which is safer for you and your oven.
