The Dark Days, Chapter 7 We walked into the orphanage, leaving the door open in case we needed to leave quickly, and Acacia had her dagger ready. We had just reached the stairs when, quick as lightning, a figure darted behind us and slammed the door shut. Acacia whirled around, her dagger raised, and my heart beat loudly. We started to back up the stairs, still facing the door, just in case. I wanted to bolt into my room, but I knew that whoever or whatever was in here wouldn’t allow that. We crested the stairs, and I turned around, allowing Acacia to watch my back. I turned left, into the dormitory, and reached under my bed. I felt around for the loose floorboard, then my fingers brushed it and I pulled it up. Inside, I took out all of my measly belongings: A stolen library card, a slingshot, and a laser pointer that I ‘borrowed’ from a store a few blocks over. I cast aside the library card, kept the slingshot, and debated over the laser pointer. In the end, I decided to take it, and I pocketed it, but kept the slingshot raised, the pebbles I had collected for ammunition. “That’s it?” Acacia asked, looking angry. “We’re in here with some evil thing, only to get a slingshot and a laser pointer?” I was hurt. “It has sentimental value.” I protested. Acacia muttered something about what I could do about my sentimental value, but she still followed me as we made our way down the stairs, her dagger ready. We were halfway down the stairs when something went wrong. We had reached the fifth step, and my foot was just about to land on the sixth, when the floor at the foot of the stairs opened up and the stairs leveled out into a slide. Acacia, thinking fast, sunk her dagger into the newly formed slide, stopping her decent. But I, weaponless, kept sliding into the basement I didn’t know the orphanage had. I landed on my butt, but unlike all the cool horror movies, there was no mattress to break my fall. I tried to stand, but my backside made me walk like an old man. A hear some movement to my left, and I tried to peer through the darkness to see who had made the sound, or even where I was. I looked up, but my only source of light, through the trapdoor, was closing, and I saw Acacia still staring at me, stunned. I saw her wrench her dagger out of the slide, start to come down, but the trapdoor closed and I heard a thud as Acacia landed on the floor. “Hello?” I asked, trying to see if Acacia could hear me. “Hello, Mark Smith. I’ve been waiting.” A snake-like voice said, right into my ear. I jumped, wanting to whirl around, but I stopped at the last moment, because two yellow beams of light shone on the wall in front of me. I panicked, wanting to mentally slap myself. Of course this thing didn’t retreat. He just made us think he was, so he could lure me here! My breath came out in shallow, short spots. The nightmare hissed, or possibly laughed, into my ear. “Look into my eyes, Mark Smith. I’ve got other people to kill.” I immediately shut my eyes, but a question sprang into my mind. “Are you like, Medusa’s brother or something?” I heard the thing growl, a sound so terrifying I wanted to take back what I said. “I, the pathetic excuse for fear? No, little one, I AM fear….. Boo!” Funnily as it seems, it was definitely not funny at the time. I jumped, and, not being able to hold it in anymore, screamed at the top of my lungs. In case you’re wondering, it wasn’t a very high pitched scream, and it wasn’t a silent scream. It was just a way of expressing my fear vocally. Acacia just told me I sounded like a total girl, but I’m going to ignore that. Back to my (totally manly) screaming. The thing laughed, but at that moment, several things happened at once. The thing laughed, but then the trapdoor above my head opened, and a body sailed over me, straight into the nightmare. I heard the evil thing hit the floor, and then Acacia stood up behind me. “He’s out for now. Let’s go.” I turned around, my face still emotionless. “What?” Acacia asked, looking for a mirror. “You just body-slammed the enemy that even the gods can’t stop?” Acacia grabbed the edge if the pit, hoisted herself up, then I followed suit. “Yeah,” She admitted as we walked out of the orphanage. I saw the orphans walking toward us with Mrs. Williams, and I realized we’d have to do something. But, just before the arrived, Acacia finished her sentence. “Welcome to my life.” -Odysseus Like it?
