The Dominican Republic brought in thousands of Haitians over the - TopicsExpress

The Dominican Republic brought in thousands of Haitians over the last couple of years to provide much of the labor for new roads and infrastructure to the country...not paying many of them through trickery and deceit...then deporting them back. Now they pull this stunt... Last week the Constitutional Court of the Dominican Republic made the un-appealable decision that Dominicans of Haitian ancestry would have to be deprived of their DR citizenship if their parents or grand parents had been in the DR illegally. The new law is retroactive going back to 1929 and is bound to affect more than 200,000 men, women and children who will become stateless and not entitled to any social services including education, health care or even any legal act for which a birth certificate is required. This is happening just on the anniversary of the October 1937 massacre of 20,000 Haitians in the DR ordered by ex dictator Leonidas Trujillo. This is a very dark time for Human Rights in the Dominican Republic for Haitians but also for all Dominicans of conscience. Please mobilize to prevent another series of pogroms, persecutions and possible massacre of Haitians in the DR. Write to the president of the country to suspend the implementation of that new law. You may write also to the US government _(who uses your taxpayer dollars in the billions to fund programs to protect your ports and boarders) to denounce this abomination and call the Inter-American Human Rights Commission of which the DR is a signatory.
