The EPA’s proposed CO2 emissions plan would result in higher electricity costs, power plant closures and the resulting job losses, and challenges to the reliability of the electric grid. Witnesses at today’s SST hearing to address this plan echoed the above sentiment and emphasized that a state-level public utility commission, not the EPA, is better suited to protect customer interests and ensure reliability. I believe this administration is pushing an agenda to eliminate low-cost and reliable electricity and replace it with more expensive and less reliable sources. Instead of being forced to sacrifice reliability to comply with costly regulations, states should be given the flexibility and authority to make choices that best meet their needs and protect hardworking Americans from rising utility rates.
