They said having a brown skin tone and living in the wrong school zone made us more prone to end up on the Island of Rikers Than inside of a college class room. They said that our chances appeared slim Based upon socio-economics and failing educational system. But we are no strangers to hard work… You don’t cross oceans, survive slavery, colonization, and social deprivation to become weak. WE CAN BE BECAUSE WE KNOW WE CAN We transcended the hypocrisy that denied us the opportunity To became lawyers and doctors And entertainment celebrities And made it work… Forcing our swag to become all the more noticeable and our attitudes - a bit more cocky. So Today, We invite the haters and naysayers to partake, and feast upon what the Pristine in Green hath wrought . When some say we don’t have room to talk… We reply, “I dare August Martin, Springfield and Hillcrest To tread across the fire that we’ve had to walk!” School cops Big Brother Over-age Casanova . School administrators Racist under cover. Metal detectors failing to protect us… hoping that we’ll sit back, say nothing, and just accept this? This life of mediocrity they’re trying to sell us?...highly unlikely. This is a story about an Evolution The evolution of Generation X The evolution of a school In Southeast Queens that nurtured the dreams of some of the most influential people In popular culture today. Perplexed by the effects of Reganomics… Raised in ghetto compounds Generating the sounds of What is to be Our legacy… Block parties and schoolyard jams Became the soundtrack To our story… Music became the conduit and Rap became the words That would manifest this underground movement. Thrusting forward the idea that we could Fight The Powers That Be… and thar Self- Destruction was not an option Because when you KNOW YOU CAN you Cran To Understand how anybody could be Not down with O.P.P... Optimism. Perseverance. Pride. And all it means to be Cool Like that Is to know that adversity and struggle Builds Character and Makes you feel like the bomb inside. So when I hear the AJ anthem My heart flutters about… Because I know that my past does not dictate how my future will turn out. The AJ Spirit is a conscious one It’s the understanding that the struggle isn’t over And our work is far from done… And the reconditioning of societies thinking Is our responsibility by default. WE CAN because They said we couldn’t WE CAN because We knew we Could WE CAN because we refused to believe that an unfavorable circumstance equals and unfavorable outcome.
