The Gentle Slope! To paraphrase the words of the late Oxford Academic and literary critic, C. S. Lewis, the road that most often leads a believer away from God is the gradual one - the gentle slope, the soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, milestones, or signposts. Why is that? Some understanding of this phenomenon is revealed by the twentieth century American Pastor, A.W. Tozer, who once wrote: “Every farmer knows the hunger of the wilderness. That hunger which no modern farm machinery, no improved agricultural methods, can quite destroy. No matter how well prepared the soil, how well kept the fences, how carefully painted the buildings, let the owners neglect for a while their prized and valued acres and they will revert again to the wilds and be swallowed by the jungle or the wasteland. The bias of nature is toward the wilderness, never toward the fruitful field.” Sincere intentions, years of embedded doctrine, and warm memories of dramatic conversions are of little consequence when the bias of life pulls at one’s heart. Just as necessity demands that people create a Get Ready emergency plan for use during times of extreme weather and natural disasters, there remains the ever increasing personal need to be more aware of the tendencies of life, quietly drawing people of faith toward the gentle slope, away from God.
