The Gorilla Foundation is a non-profit corporation devoted to the preservation, protection, and well-being of gorillas through interspecies communication research and education. The foundation was established in 1976 and is mostly known for its revolutionary work with two western lowland gorillas, Koko and Michael. Koko and Michael were taught to become fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and Koko had an understanding of approximately 2000 words of spoken english. They were able to sign stories from their past, recount the emotions attached to them, as well as create art with paint. Michael, who passed away at the age of 27 in 2000, learned ASL, partially, from his interactions with Koko. Koko, 42 years old, has become an ambassador for her species, communicating to humans the critical danger her species and their habitat are in. Check out this short clip of Michael the silverback gorilla!
