The Health Benefits of Coffee In a world of gourmet coffee - TopicsExpress

The Health Benefits of Coffee In a world of gourmet coffee and tea houses sprouting up on every corner it is time to get serious about the question is coffee or tea bad for your health? Are gourmet coffees such as Illy coffee different than other brands in regards to health properties? Just like every topic you can sink your teeth into this subject can be debated on every side. It is important to note that everything you consume should always be done in moderation. Too much of anything could be a bad thing. Some new research confirms that coffee and tea might have huge health benefits. It seems that women who drink a few cups of tea or coffee per day might have a lower risk of endometrial cancer, one of the most common types of cancer of the reproductive organs. In 2008 the American Cancer Society estimated 40,000 women were diagnosed with this type of cancer, about 7700 of them have died from it. The study that was performed sought answers to the role that popular drinks might play to cancer risks. The study did not discount the fact that there are other factors that contribute to this type of cancer. Data was collected on questionnaires between 1982 and 1998. The questionnaire was detailed and given to nearly 1100 women. 541 of the women were diagnosed with endometrial cancer, 541 controls that had a uterus and were seen for evaluation but were not diagnosed with a malignancy. It is known that about ½ of the patients that were given the questionnaire returned it to the center. Those patients who drank regular coffee or black tea appeared to have a lower risk of uterine cancer than those who were non drinkers. Patients who drank 4 cups of coffee or tea per day were only half as likely as those who didnt drink these beverages to have this form of cancer. No one is certain of why coffee or tea may have an effect on this type of cancer but Dr Susan E McCann of the Rosewell Park Cancer Institute suspects caffeine. It has been shown that caffeine induces some enzymes that help to neutralize potential cancer causing substances. It is pure speculation but it is also known that coffee and tea is chock full of antioxidants that are known to neutralize free radicals that run rampant and damage our cells. It is also know that these types of drinks have isoflavones, flavonoids and catechins that could also protect your body against cancers. I am definitely a coffee lover. Knowing that having a cup or two of Illy coffee every morning could aid in the fight against free radicals is just the cherry that tops the cake. I am sure that the study did not indicate that the patients drank gourmet beverages like Illy coffee or just your run of the mill Folgers brand. What coffee or tea brands that you drink are definitely a personal choice. It would be logical to assume that coffee beans or tea leafs that were organically grown could in fact be healthier than those using pesticides. Many more expensive brands such as Illy coffee are more selective about the types of beans they buy and the properties they consist of. For now, lets just say that there are definitely some health benefits to those who drink coffee and tea. From one coffee lover to another I say drink up.
