The Honourable Steven Fletcher announces funding for commemorative projects WINNIPEG, Nov. 5, 2014 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood–St. James–Assiniboia–Headingley, today announced Government of Canada support for Veterans Week commemorative and educational activities in Winnipeg. MP Fletcher made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of Veterans Affairs. Presented by Unit 283 (Assiniboia) of the Army, Navy and Airforce Veterans in Canada (ANAVETS), the activities will include school visits, a poetry competition and a remembrance church service leading up to Remembrance Day. A commemorative ceremony and dinner will also be held November 9, 2014, to mark the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and the 75th anniversary of Canadas engagement in the Second World War. More than 600 people are expected to take part in the weeks programming, including up to 100 local Veterans, 100 still-serving Canadian Armed Forces members and 75 youth. ANAVETS Unit 283 (Assiniboia) is receiving $2,500 through Veterans Affairs Canadas Community Engagement Partnership Fund to support Veterans Week activities. Since 2006, the Government of Canada has approved more than $13 million, through the Community Engagement Partnership Fund, for projects that recognize Veterans and those who died in service.
