The IBA at NIBS We’re back again with news from the NIBS - TopicsExpress

The IBA at NIBS We’re back again with news from the NIBS competition. We go straight to the point. Unfortunately. We did not win today. We played against Bishops this afternoon, and it was a 5/6 decision, meaning we lost – but very narrowly. In the NIBS competition judges have 11 points to give to the two teams, and there has to be a winner, meaning that 5/6 is the narrowest margin you can win or lose with. We had a, for NIBS standards, quite short, but rather nasty case about pig breeding in Canada – and this on a day when you are up against a Canadian team. The direction of the case was not clear, but it leant towards a financial solution, which unfortunately is what the North Americans traditionally prefer. We did a good presentation, but the judges preferred Bishop’s solution to ours. The team was obviously not happy with this, but they are ready to go back into battle tomorrow. The team did not have the time to eat during preparation today, so after the match – and having seen Carleton Sprott, who we shall meet tomorrow – we all went for a rather late lunch at four o’clock. Here we had the opportunity to discuss what went wrong, and to build up new confidence for tomorrow. One of the things that went wrong was that the team lost its financial calculations due to computer problems. This meant that we did not have time to do a proper benchmark analysis of our alternatives. We have decided that such a misfortune will not happen again. And all is not lost. Later today Carleton Sprott beat St. Mary’s 7/4. This means that now Carleton Sprott have 17 points, we have 13, Bishops have 11, and St. Mary’s have 8. Not that bad for us, considering that we are battling against three North American teams. We simply have to win tomorrow and then we’ll be in the quarter finals. If we don’t beat Carleton, and St. Mary’s beat Bishops, we may still be in the quarter finals. The team is set and ready to go tor it. We’ll let you know tomorrow.
