The IEP meeting went well. Very very well. We agreed to continue OT (Sensory), PT, Counseling all 1x30; Speech 2x30; keeping accommodations the same as theyve worked for him, adding in a few more the Developmental Behavioral Pedi suggested (Color coding schedule for things that are definite/might happen/etc); making him a transition plan and goal to help with his transition to middle school next year (We all agreed to meet in March to go over accommodations to help the transition be successful); discussed the appropriate placements at the middle school for him. I learned at the middle school they have two different substantially separate classrooms: One for children with Intellectual disabilities where wed have to add in behavioral supports or one based on the one he is in now for children who need additional behavioral and social supports but add in more academics (I am concerned with such a placement at the middle school level because he might pick up more negative behaviors from the other teens). Hmmm. Were going to have a meeting in early March to discuss both placements and supports hed need to have a successful transition. I guess in either classroom they pull out for gym, music and/or art. I made it clear hed need a 1:1 aide for that. When the time gets closer, probably in Jan-Feb Im going to go tour both programs to see which would be a better fit. The school psych and principal both did a great job advocating for his needs. Weve been blessed with having them both know him well (And who knows things about my son the new IEP chairperson never would understand without having known him during his struggles).
