The Jewish people of the time of Jesus had more stories of woes - TopicsExpress

The Jewish people of the time of Jesus had more stories of woes than joy. Their God given right to choose who rule over them had been hijacked by waves of foreign invasions. The Greeks, the Persians, the Babylonians, and the Romans had taken their turns to lord it over them. They were the oppressed; the victims, with more than their fair share of poverty and sickness. It was also the time of the Zealot movement. Those who sought to rid Israel of Roman oppression through violence. Depending on who you speak to, they were either freedom fighters or terrorists. It was also the time of the Sadducees. These were the money bags, the nobles, the aristocrats, the business tycoons, the Priests who sought to conserve their wealth and power through compromise with the oppressors. The time of Jesus on earth was also the time of the Pharisees, the teachers of the law; those strict law keepers that Jesus refers to in Mathew 23 as those who lay heavy burdens on the shoulders of the people, but are not willing to offer a helping hand. So, as it was in the time of Jesus, so it is today. Jesus response to the crisis of His time can be found in Mathew 11:28 – Come to me, all of you who are weary and loaded down with heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. And that is exactly what he is still saying today, over 2000 years when he made the first appeal. Will you come to him today? He heals the broken hearted, and restore broken lives. Will you come?
