The Juris Doctor (J.D.) is a professional doctorate and first professional graduate degree in law. The degree is earned by completing law school in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other common law countries. The majority of individuals holding a J.D. must pass an examination in order to be licensed to practice law within their respective jurisdictions. While individuals holding a J.D. are generally known as lawyers, those professionals who pass a required bar examination are generally known as attorneys.
