“The Longney Lads” shine for Nomads Dursley Nomads hosted - TopicsExpress

“The Longney Lads” shine for Nomads Dursley Nomads hosted old rivals Cainscross at Ponds Green in a well contested game in spite of the rain, hail, thunder and lightning. A typical Nomads side combining youth and experience got off to a frantic and enthusiastic start and immediately put pressure on the opposition. The Dursley forwards, aggressive and purposeful, secured the majority of possession but the difficult conditions and inaccurate passing led to handling errors and the Nomads were unable to get points on the board. Due to excellent communication and fearless tackling, not seen in a Nomads side for a while, Cainscross were unable to break out of their own half and some accurate kicking from full back Tony Powell kept the opposition pinned back. Just before half time came the breakthrough that the Nomads deserved when Phil Bennett picked from the back of the ruck 12 metres out and charged the Cainscross line. Stopped short the remaining forwards attacked the ruck and Sam Merritt crossed the line for a great forwards try. The conversion successful Dursley went into the break 7-0 ahead. At the start of the second half Cainscross rallied and due to a few ‘knock ons’ at the back threatened to cross the Dursley try line. Again the defence was impenetrable and wave after wave of Cainy attack was repelled. The boot of Tony Powell and some incisive running from the backs got the Nomads camped back in the Cainscross half. The severity of the Dursley tackling started to take its toll on the opposition and they had soon used up their reserves and were then reduced to 14 men. Captain Moorsom stepped up and took over the No8 jersey for Cainscross and immediately made an impact visibly worrying to Nomads defence. Unable to find a way through the red wall Cainscross began to lose hope and Dursley were soon back in the opposition 22 pressuring the line. Scrum half Jason Burt skilfully picked up the charge of Phil Bennett who crashed over the line to score his first try in longer than he can remember. It was not long before the Nomads scored again as Caincross were unable to cover the acres of space that the Dursley forwards were creating for their backs to run amok. Forced to give away a penalty it was Merritt who called for the quick tap and ran in from 15 metres to score a terrific try under the posts. Merritt had a chance of a third when some deft and unselfish passing from George Underwood and Greg Wasely gave him a clear run to the line. Unfortunately some poor handling from Merritt denied him his hatrick. The fantastic game ended with Dursley Nomads winning 19-0. This was certainly the best performance of the season and thanks to all the players who turned out. A special mention to Dan Wiicap, Russ Reeves, Jamie Bateman, Tony Niblett , Mark Ansell and George Underwood who all made their season debut for the Nomads. Next week we are home to Minchinhampton Rams. Meet 1.45pm. Kick off 3pm.
