The Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap competition is less than a week away, and it’s time for our final #MHBT faculty spotlight! This week veteran faculty member Sarah DiMaggio shares some insights about the program. She also shares these awesome photos of a card a student made for her. So cool! -Why do you think MHBT is important to Milwaukee? First off, I dont just think it is important ... I know it is! It would be great to see it everywhere, not just Milwaukee. We have some pretty alarming statistics here in Milwaukee in relation to poverty, teen pregnancy, obesity, etc. I think that MHBT changes that before it even happens...it changes the very fabric of which young people are made. It gives them new perspective, fresh beginnings, the ability to change, believe in themselves, be positive, learn, grow, respect, love and DANCE! It is the most powerful thing I have ever been a part of and it is LIFE CHANGING... -What do you see as the greatest benefit to students in MHBT? Well, believe it or not, above all the dancing comes this new personality. They are so changed in attitude and intention! They learn communication, teamwork, trust, self-respect, respect for others and last but not least, manners. Oh yes, there is more I have to add ... just not to be offended by others words or actions! -What differences do you see between teaching in a community-based program vs. studio teaching? We go to them! They cant escape! LOL. Seriously though...I feel like we reach more bodies and touch more lives by going to them. With our program (MHBT) specifically, it is designed to the needs of our demographic. These students need structure and goal oriented tasks. Even though we focus on the journey, the competition is that goal/ reward that is the cherry on top. Studio classes are fantastic though, I just feel my purpose in life is to Mad Hot it all day long! -Do you have a favorite story from MHBT that you would like to share? I have stories to tell...lots...so many, I cannot even choose a favorite but instead I will share one of the cards that I was given by a student that I cherish for the rest of my life... (see the photos below) -Finally, tell us a fun fact about yourself. I dont know... Is it fun? Not sure, but I have never worn jeans, I color code my closet, I refold every article of clothing, sheet and towel I own once a month...is that fun enough? #MadHotMKE #OneStepAtATime
