The Making of The Joker.....Part 4. Covering with fondant. When covering a head I always start with the back of the head first, taking it about halfway towards the front. Cover the seam with gladwrap while you work on rolling the fondant for the face. I roll it around 5mm thick as its nice to have some depth in there to create the facial wrinkles and markings. Join the seam between the two parts. I generally work from top to bottom smoothing, be very careful with trapped air under the fondant as this can come back to bite you later on with some cracks in your surface. I use an acupuncture needle and generally chase the bubbles to an inconspicuous area (eye socket). Add in the facial markings, make sure you have excellent references for this! Again, get your clay to practice on. I normally add the eyes next so the fondant of the face is still soft enough to blend the eyelids in with. Then my favourite part.......the teeth! As most of the head is now covered you can spend time on the teeth, again using several references taking note of the natural grooves and marking of the teeth.
