The Mother was young and set her foot on the path of life. Is this the long way? she wondered. She heard a voice say: Yes, the way is long and hard and you will be old before you reach the end of it but the end will be better than the beginning. The Mother was young and happy. She could not believe that anything would be better than these years. She played with her children. She loved and nurtured them. She thought nothing will ever be better than this. Then night came and a storm. It was dark and the children were afraid. She drew them close and put her arms around them. The children were not afraid because she was near. Then a new morning came and there was a hill to climb. The children climbed the hill and grew tired. The Mother was tired too but all time she told her children, Have patience and we will soon be there. So the children climbed and when they reached the top they said, Mother, we could not have done this without you. When the mother laid down that night, she looked up at the stars, and she thought, this is a better day than the last because my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday they learned courage and today I have taught them to be strong. The next day came with more difficulties on earth. There was war and hate and evil and the children turned to their mother, The Mother said: Lift your eyes up, look to the light.” The children looked up and saw an everlasting glory that went beyond the difficulties on earth, beyond the darkness. That night the mother thought, this is the best day of all for my children have looked toward God. The days went on, the weeks, and months, and the years. The Mother grew old and she was little and bent over. Her children now were tall and strong and walked with courage. When the way was rough they lifted her for she was as light as a feather. They could see a shining road and golden gates that opened wide. The Mother said, I have reached the end of my journey and now I know the end is better than the beginning for my children are strong and can walk alone. The children said, You will always walk with us, mother, even when you have gone through the golden gates. They watched as she went alone and the gates closed after her. The children said: We cannot see her but she is with us still. A mother like ours is more than a memory.
