The Muslim Belt in Sub-Sahran Africa that includes Sudan, Chad, parts of the Central African Republic, Cameroon and Nigeria, and further west. It was and remains a patchwork of sultantes and emirates, dominated by moderate Sufism, which promotes a benign albeit orthodox and conservative form of Islam. You may have heard of Darfur and its tragic story, but you may not have heard of the peoples and rulers to the west of it. One thing to note from this book is the chronicle of the reigns of the sultans of Zaghawa Dosa. The reign of Sultan Dosa Abdul Rahman, spanning French colonial and independence periods in Chad, lasted between 1912 and 1981 when he died at roughly the age of 99. If it had been a sovereign state in the time, it would have ranked among the longest reigns.
