The Proverb says, A merry heart does good like medicine. Well, here is something that just might be the medicine your heart needs. If you are a fan of the sweet stuff, like my two daughters, this might be great news for you. Dark chocolate is good for you, and scientists now know why—and surprisingly, it’s not due to the flavonols it contains. A new study in The FASEB Journal reports that dark chocolate helps restore flexibility to the arteries while also preventing white blood cells from sticking to blood vessel walls, both factors that play a major role in atherosclerosis. Researchers also found that increasing the flavanol content didn’t change this effect. “We provide a more complete picture of the impact of chocolate consumption in vascular health and show that increasing flavanol content has no added beneficial effect on vascular health,” report study authors. “However, this increased flavanol content clearly affected taste and thereby the motivation to eat these chocolates. So the dark side of chocolate is a healthy one.” In addition to benefiting heart health, research shows that consuming moderate amounts of high-quality dark chocolate may also help improve mood and may even aid weight loss. When it comes to chocolate, the darker the better—and limit consumption to one to two ounces a day. According the the Huffington Post, Treating yourself to a small amount of chocolate regularly is definitely a health message we can get behind. Want to improve your health and make money too?
