The Savior taught His disciples about the importance of understanding His name and identity in the 16th chapter of Matthew verses 13-27. He inquired to know who other men said that He was, and then turned the question directly to His companions, saying, But whom say ye that I am? Peters powerful reply rings forth across the millennia to pierce our hearts today, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. After, and only after, Peter sought to know the Christ, then Christ revealed Peters identity and role much more clearly. This corresponds nicely with the promise given in the same chapter to those who deny themselves and follow Christ, for whosoever will save his life shall lose it, and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. If we seek to know and follow Christ in lieu of the modern trend of self-help and self-discovery, we will find ourselves, and we will find that we are becoming more and more like Him.
