The Sermon on the Mount begins with a reference to the kingdom - TopicsExpress

The Sermon on the Mount begins with a reference to the kingdom (Matt 5:3) and ends with a reference to the kingdom (7:21). It begins with a description of whos in (5:3-12) and ends with a description of whos out (7:21-27). These passages which emphasize what we do are not intended as a description of how to get in; they describe those who are in. The description of those who are out centers on the verb ποιεω. What is it that they do or dont do (the will of my Father 7:21, 24)? We evangelicals often are afraid of mixing justification and sanctification but Bible writers did not seem to be afraid of saying that the characteristic of kingdom people is what they do. Expressions of faith (Lord, Lord 7:21) must be accompanied by the appropriate deeds. Wouldnt James say the same thing?
