The Shore Bliss Yoga studio in Apollo Beach, FL will begin offering free monthly classes designed specifically for veterans on February 8, 2015. The classes will be held in two sessions: Asana (postures) Class 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm; iRest® Yoga Nidra 1:30 to 2:15. Students may attend one or both sessions free of charge. The two sessions will be offered monthly on the second Sunday. The active asana session is a trauma sensitive yoga class which supports participants of all injury levels (seen and unseen) using techniques of breath work, sensory enhanced physical postures, and restoration as developed by the Warriors At Ease foundation. This class will provide students means to reconnect with parts of themselves that were complete, whole, and healthy prior to facing traumas of war. It will teach tools to lessen difficulties with PTSD and physical pain from injuries. As a result, the students may develop emotional resiliency, improved quality of sleep and energy levels, as well as enhanced self-worth and personal empowerment. The second of the Sunday sessions includes iRest® (Integrative Restoration) Yoga Nidra, which is integrative in that it heals the various unresolved issues, traumas, and wounds that are present in the body and mind. It is restorative in that it aids its practitioners in recognizing their underlying peace of mind that is always present amidst all changing circumstances of life. iRest® Yoga Nidra has been developed over the past twenty-six years by Richard Miller, PhD, a clinical psychologist, author, researcher and yogic scholar, and is uniquely suitable for a Western audience. Extensive research has shown that iRest® effectively supports the healing process across a broad range of populations. There are iRest® programs in military hospitals across the U.S., as well as in correctional facilities, hospices, clinics, schools, and organizations supporting personal growth and well-being. In June of 2010, iRest® was endorsed by the US Army Surgeon General and Defense Centers of Excellence as a complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). iRest® has been proven through military research to induce deep relaxation throughout the body and mind, eliminate stress, overcome insomnia, solve personal and interpersonal problems, resolve trauma, neutralize and overcome anxiety, fear, anger, and depression. During your practice of iRest®, you will be supported in a reclined position by bolsters and blankets as the facilitator takes you through a meditation that involves body sensing, intention setting, emotional awareness and the practice of finding an inner resource. No physical asana (postures) will be practiced. The classes for veterans will be taught by Marsha Lockom, RYT200, Warriors at Ease certified yoga teacher, iRest® level one teacher. Faced with debilitating pain of fibromyalgia, Marsha fully embraced yoga fifteen years ago. Using yoga as a therapeutic aid, she freed herself from all medications and returned to a productive and happy life. Yoga is not only essential to maintain her health, it is a gift that continues to give in a multitude of incredible ways. The healing power of yoga is a gift that Marsha actively seeks to share with her students.
