The Supreme Court decision in Shelby County vs. Holder has been released with the Court ruling 5-4 to strike down the formula for determining the areas covered by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. Elisabeth MacNamara President of the LWV United States responded to the decision today, “Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision erases fundamental protections against racial discrimination in voting that have been effective for more than 40 years. Congress must act quickly to restore the Voting Rights Act.”
