The TY Danjuma Foundation yesterday in Abuja declared that it has so far committed the total sum of N715.2million in grants in the last three years. The foundation, which also unveiled a new executive director, said it has set aside the sum of N250million for its operation this year. The founder, Lt. General TY Danjuma, made this disclosure at a press conference after its enlarged board meeting. He gave a breakdown of the funds which comprises main grants and discretionary grants as follows: N390.496m in 2010, N195.768m in 2011 and N128.945 in2012. However, the philanthropist said some of the projects and programmes were still being implemented and as such the foundation still held on to the funds and would be deploying them as work progresses. General Danjuma announced that the foundation has notched up the number of benefitting states to include Ebonyi, Imo and Benue, adding that they are ready to expand but must be based on the quality of proposals made by the NGOs/CDOs in any state. In unveiling Dr Florence Etta as the new executive director, he described her as a seasoned educationist, evaluator and an internationally recognised expert in various aspects of philanthropic and development work. She succeeds Dr Edugie Abebe who as interim executive director between 2012 and May 2013 successfully moulded the foundation into a robust team, he added. Said he: “The TY Danjuma Foundation’s primary focus is on enhancing the quality of life of mainly rural Nigerians by supporting initiatives to improve access to quality health care and education, and alleviate poverty. We do this by supporting Nigeria-based NGOs and CBOs to deliver these services in Nigeria. “We are currently supporting 66 such NGOs/CBOs in our three areas of focus, i.e., education, community health and income generation, working in 14 states of the federation and the FCT. The current transitional year sees us adding 3 states: Ebonyi, Imo and Benue. “I want to reiterate that the TYDF is a grant-making organisation. We call for proposals in our areas of focus and screen submitted proposals to identify innovative, practical ones that will have meaningful impact in the communities. These are then funded for implementation and monitored by us to ensure that we get value for money. Our value is community satisfaction and benefit, and we work in any state of the federation as long as proposals meet our criteria.”
