The Third Sunday after The Epiphany Today the gathered Church - TopicsExpress

The Third Sunday after The Epiphany Today the gathered Church talked about fishing....in so many words. Jesus invited Peter and Andrew, and James and John, all fisherfolk, to follow me, and I will make you fish for people. Its an odd turn of phrase, and that is part of its point. I imagine some Far Side-eque vision of a fish casting a rod onto a dock and catching a human, perhaps with a hamburger on the hook. (It occurs to me this has probably been done.) Our preacher where I worshiped today said that the Gospel as Good News was words and had to be spoken and had to be heard to be effective, that that is how we fish for people. And the first reading had to so with fish too - the story of Jonah has much to do with a certain fish which caught him and not the other way around. Today were asked how we are or are not fishing for people. Heres a simple way: invite someone you know to church with you, and bring them. If every Christian did that once a month, what would the effect be? Even if the invitation itself is declined, akin to casting the rod and reeling it back empty, but is offered 12 times a year by every believer, there would still surely be lots of fish caught!
