The Tinian album contains pictures of where I am right now with my Marines and Sailors. Were working 24/7 to restore historic North Field while we train for our mission of establishing a base where there wasnt one and proceeding with flight ops. North Field is the launching point for both missions to drop the atomic bomb. One beach is where Marines landed to wrest the island from Japanese control. The cliff is supposedly Suicide Cliff where Japanese dove into the water rather than face capture. Once there was no longer a need for a base here, the jungle took over, and all of the infrastructure indicated on the Seabees Memorial map has been overrun and is effectively gone. Im like a kid in a candy store as I get my nerd history fix while getting a tan and snorkeling in November. Though I really really do wish I could share this place with Amanda Oehrlein. More to come as I visit other areas of the island and memorials/historical sites.
