The Uganda police force directorate of fire safety and rescue services in conjunction with the Uganda Red Cross, fire and safety appliances and the burns section at the national referral hospital Mulago yesterday 24th July 2014, launched a campaign on fire prevention, fire fighting techniques at Kawempe as part of the on-going centenary plus celebrations. The function was blessed by the resident city commissioner for Kawempe M/s Nabukenya who argued the people of Kawempe to work closely with the police to enhance problem solving and service delivery. The fire safety and rescue services demonstrated to the public and the school children how to extinguish fire using the different fire extinguishers. The deputy director fire safety and rescue services SP Kihanda taught the gathering the different causes of fire: • Arson • Negligence • Poor electricity wiring • Power thefts The medics from Mulago taught the people who included school children first aid rules when someone is burnt: • Pour cold water on the wound for 10 minutes • Do not apply anything on the wound ( no creams, ointments, mud, sand, sugar or honey) • Seek medical attention immediately The people were also taught how to prevent burns: • Use a stable sigiri (charcoal stove) • Protect or fence off all cooking places • Keep children away from all cooking places • Keep children away from pots/pans containing hot fluids • Never leave a candle/tadooba unattended to • Blow it out when your child goes to sleep • Blow it out when you leave the room/house
