The University of Tübingen has lots of fascinating music on line. Here is something for which I looked for years and years. There are some indications that a lone trumpeter served as bandmaster in the early days of marching bands. He was later replaced by a player of the keyed trumpet, the keyed bugle and then the Flügelhorn. His instrument, held high, served the same purpose as the drum majors baton. When I was in the band in Bavaria, the first Flügelhorn player had the same status as the concertmaster of a symphony orchestra and, in the absence of a conductor, led the band. These pieces, judged on the dates of the person who wrote them down, are from about 1820. The trumpet ascends to D and the first horn to A, if I am not mistaken. There are numerous stopped notes in the horn parts but all of them are quite conservative ... no outlandish chromaticism. Here is the title and the first page of each part.
