The Way It Was A short story by Dr Rankin A family with a sick child walks into the office without an appointment.... FATHER: Our son is really sick can you help us? MY STAFF: Of course, we always see sick walk in patients. MOTHER: Here is our insurance card. MY STAFF: The website that is used to verify your insurance says the coverage is not active. MOTHER: That is strange the coverage started two weeks ago. MY STAFF: No problem, you can pay cash now and we will submit to your insurance. If the website is wrong, which can happen, we will be paid and will reimburse you. PARENTS: That is fine. We VALUE the health of our child and the good care you will provide. We VALUE our time and the fact we can be treated now versus waiting several hours or even a day to sort this out. We VALUE the fact that you spent 11 years in training after high school in order to provide a service very few others can provide. Thank you for seeing our son today. Dr RANKIN: My pleasure. I spent all that time learning because I enjoy helping other people and I VALUE that you recognize the time and sacrifice it takes to become a physician. The End....or maybe a new beginning.
