~ The Widow of The South ~ Carrie Winder, McGavock Mrs. John McGavock of Carnton Plantation This the the real lady of the South who was mistress of Carnton. It is she who was responsible for turning her lovely home into a hospital for the wounded Confederate soldiers during and after the Battle of Franklin. She torn sheets up and along with her children and maid, they made them into bandages for the wounded. She turned their home into a hospital using the nursery upstairs as a surgery room. I have been there and saw this room, very small I may add, but sufficient. The floors are stained with the blood from 150 years ago. I am told that it was Gen Nathan Bedford Forrest who came to the home prior to the battle to confiscate the home to use as a hospital. He also used the back porch balcony to view the battlefield, as the end of it is a breezeway making it easy to view the Carnton plain. After the battle was over just like this week-end, the mild weather turned bitter cold and the ground froze overnight. Many soldiers who survived would later freeze from the elements. One has to see this to understand what this family did for our soldiers that fateful night of Nov.30, 1864. I could tell you much much more but it would take up way to much room here. To say it is hallowed ground there, is putting it lightly, in my opinion.
