The Yas Marina Circuit is located on Yas Island, a 2,550 hectare island on the east coast of Abu Dhabi. The circuit is unique on the Formula 1 calendar due to it being the only ‘dusk’ race of the season with the race starting in daylight and finishing under the powerful lights that replicate daylight throughout the lap, as seen in Singapore. Location – Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi, UAE The United Arab Emirates is made up of seven ‘Emirates’ and is located in the oil-rich and strategic Persian Gulf region and adjoins the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Sultanate of Oman. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the UAE and equates to 87% of the UAE and embraces approx. 200 islands off its 700km coastline, which includes Yas Island, where the circuit is located. Dhabi is the Arabic name of a particular species of native Arabian gazelle that was once common in the region. Abu Dhabi means the place rich in Dhabi. In 1966 the British assisted with the ascension of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to the throne, which was instrumental in the development of the UAE. After the Emirates gained independence in 1971, oil wealth continued to flow to the area and traditional mud-brick huts were rapidly replaced with the modern city that is there today.
