The alarming rise of fatal road accidents in Goa should be a matter of grave concern. The law needs to be amended to severly deal with rash and negligent driving especially when the accident is due to drunken driving. So many precious lives are being just mowed away. 21 year old Suraj Gawde was crushed to death last month and the accused should not be spared. Is it a CBI inquiry only when a Union Minister meets with a fatal accident. The authorities have to act in every case strictly in accordance with law regardless as to who the victim or the accused is. In the Suraj Gawde case why was the F.I.R registered only after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar unauthorisedly intervened. Do we need any more proof that the Goa Police are acting as caged parrots of their political masters. The Supreme Court has time and again stated that the police should be totally insulated from any political controls while directing the police that an F.I.R must be registered when a complaint discloses commission of a cognisable offence. The decision on registering the F.I.R has to be solely of the investigating officer and cannot be under anyone’s direction other than the Court. In rank violation of law Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has high-handedly been assuming the role of Director General of Police and the Public Prosecutor all in one. He would have even wanted to be the Chief Justice if he could. God save our Goa.
