The article in the Terracycle Newsletter! In each edition of the Public Drop-off Location bulletin, we will focus on one of our drop-off administrators to understand why they are taking part and how they are going about increasing their collections. For our first edition, we turn our attention to Alison Birkin, who is aiming to raise over £1,000 for Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, and is currently leading the 2014 Biscuit Wrapper Roundup competition on the McVities Biscuit Wrapper Brigade. Name: Alison Birkin Location: Tesco 24hr and Cinos Cafe at the Carillion Centre - Both in Loughborough, Leicestershire Brigades: McVities and JOHNSONS Collecting for: Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People Money Raised: £895.66 What were your reasons/goals for joining TerraCycle? My daughter has been supported by Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People in Loughborough, Leicestershire for the past 10 years. She was 20 years old this year, and the hospice was also celebrating its 20th year and they wanted to raise an extra £100,000. I decided that I would attempt to raise £1,000 of that to say thank you. What is your long-term plan for for your locations? I will continue to collect past £1,000 if people are still willing to collect. What will you do with the points you earn from TerraCycle? It will all go to Rainbows. What do you feel are the benefits of the programme? Why did the TerraCycle Brigade programme appeal to you? I liked the programme because it was really easy and I didn’t have to ask people for money, just their rubbish. It would also benefit the environment. How did you find out about the McVitie’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade? I was listening to the radio one day when driving my daughter home from a hospital appointment, and there was somebody talking about recycling babywipe wrappers. Thought it was a great idea, so researched how to do it which led me to the biscuit wrapper brigade. How do you engage the broader community at your locations? Through Facebook, Rainbows publicity and just word of mouth from my many collectors who spread the word. We have been in the newspaper once.
