Some people understand solely liquid fasts, consuming only water, broth or juices. Others undergo specific or "mono" fasts, such as short-term fruit fasts, when they eat only fruits and juices, or brown-rice fasts. The most common fast is abstinence from all food and liquid except water. Naturopaths believe that an excess of acid-forming foods, such as high-fat foods, red meats, sugary foods, can cause fatigue and poor health. Therefore many fasts avoid these particular foods.
