The candidates are in for whats shaping up to be a hotly contested byelection in Calgary-Elbow. Gordon Dirks, who was appointed education minister by Premier Jim Prentice without holding a seat in the legislature, was acclaimed to run for the PCs in Calgary-Elbow late Wednesday afternoon. John Fletcher, a lawyer and retired Canadian Armed Forces colonel will be the Wildrose candidate. NDP acclaimed lawyer Stephane McLean on Wednesday. The Liberals have nominated lawyer Susan Wright while Alberta Party Leader Greg Clark will run for his party in the byelection. The Wildrose Party came out swinging Wednesday, calling the upcoming byelection in the riding once held by Tory premiers Ralph Klein and Alison Redford “ground zero” for the long-running PC government to be put to the test.
