The case of the Santa Clara County Sheriffs deputy arrested by - TopicsExpress

The case of the Santa Clara County Sheriffs deputy arrested by fellow officers for drug possession took another twist in court Thursday as new assault and drug charges were brought up against the suspect. A chained Juan Carrillo walked into the San Jose courtroom for his arraignment Thursday. The 48-year-old suspended correctional deputy was arrested Monday at his home on charges of possessing and being under the influence of a controlled substance. Sources tell KTVU the drug is methamphetamine. On Thursday, the District Attorneys office added several new charges that raise the possible penalties dramatically. Hes charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon as well as a number of drug charges and some gun enhancements that go along with the drug charges said prosecutor Daniel Rothbach. Rothbach declined to provide more details on how the new charges came about, but in court the additional allegations led to a brief argument over Carrillos bail. His bail had been set at $121,000 but judge Hector Ramon raised it to $700,000. Rothbach -- who had requested $1 million bail -- was satisfied. The main purpose for bail is safety for the community, the Deputy District Attorney pointed out. And when we have a law enforcement officer engaging in assaultive behavior then that is a big danger to the community. The Sheriffs Department said it could not comment in detail because of the ongoing investigation, but acknowledged the new charges stem from prior incidents. I can say that they did not occur during the arrest said Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup. The arrest was uneventful and he was very cooperative. Sources told KTVU the assault incidents were part of a complaint filed against Carrillo that led to the departments internal investigation.
