Dear Robert: Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the "Fair Tax Act" (S. 122/H.R. 25) in the 113th Congress. I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond. As you know, this legislation would eliminate income taxes, payroll taxes, the self-employment tax, and certain other taxes and replace them with a retail consumption tax. I do not support this retail sales tax proposal, and studies by the Department of the Treasury have shown it will either add to our current deficit or require the sales tax to be levied at prohibitive levels. I am supportive of tax reform that is fair to California taxpayers, does not further weaken the economy and makes the filing process easier for all Americans. It is my hope that Congress can have a constructive debate on tax policy that truly benefits workers, small business owners, and American families. S. 122 is currently awaiting consideration by the Senate Finance Committee, of which I am not a member. Please know that while we may disagree, I will certainly keep your comments in mind should the Senate consider tax legislation during the 113th Congress. Again, thank you for writing.
