The day after an election is filled with remorse and/or elation, - TopicsExpress

The day after an election is filled with remorse and/or elation, whining and/or over-reach, and above all, political pundits and reporters attempting to create the narrative for the next election cycle. Am I happy or sad with Tuesdays results? Irrelevant. But I must broach two topics, which may appear to be rants: 1) in Georgia, 44% of voters chose to participate, but in my beloved Rabun County, 58% voted. Granted, 35% of voters are over 65, and almost 63% qualify for AARP, but that said, we voted. Republicans won heavily, but our percentage who supported the Libertarian party was almost double the statewide average. We voted. If you didnt vote, shut up. It is one thing to lose, it is another to not even show up for the game. Second, there will be claims of a mandate. Wrong. 50 % of 44% is 22%. 75% of 44% is 33%. Some call it math, but then math is not a strong suit of political science, law, or news. A mandate would imply that a majority of a population cries out for an action, and oddly enough, a simple majority would mean 50% + 1 vote. So elected officials, do the best you can, follow your consciences not your funding, show up and do your jobs. But dont think any of you have a mandate unless you have a majority of all voters in your area support you. And also, the constituents of every politician are all the population of their area, not just those who voted for them. Nuff said, Im stepping off my soap-box now.
